A Game for the Ages

Written By Bryant McFadden January 15, 2010

I have never been part of a game like that before as far as the ups and downs. Everything was going right in the first half and we could do no wrong, but everything that was going right completely switched to the Packers in the second half. We knew that they were going to give it everything they had to come back so it definitely wasn't a case of us letting up or anything like that. They have a very dangerous offense that is never out of any game.

I've never seen two quarterbacks play as well as Kurt and Aaron Rodgers in the same game either. Not in real life, anyway. I've seen it in video games plenty of times, but that was something else on Sunday. It seemed like every throw they made was perfect and the receivers were making plays.

After we won in overtime the mood in the locker room was one of massive relief. The satisfaction was almost overwhelming that we were able to come out on top after Green Bay's big comeback. Some people think that whoever wins the coin toss wins the game in OT, but we knew different. We didn't have a doubt that we could stop them and because of Karlos Dansby we were able to do that. He started and finished the game with huge plays and he definitely deserves a game ball for what he did for the team. He was just outstanding.

I had a shot at an interception in the game, unfortunately Adrian Wilson had a shot at the same ball. We didn't see each other and he hit me pretty good. It rung my bell a little bit and I'm still a little sore. We laughed about it in the locker room but man he got me.

Now we have to get ready for the rested Saints. We go from one loaded offense to another. The Saints' personnel is a little different from Green Bay's, but they're just as successful. Drew Brees is one of the two or three best quarterbacks in the league and with weapons like he has it's a really dangerous situation. But that's what the playoffs are about. We have to find a way to carry momentum from our win last week.

We feel like we have a great chance this week so now we have to go out on the road and do it.

Our House

Written By Bryant McFadden January 10, 2010

It's crazy to play the Packers two weeks in a row and even though the last game didn't end up meaning much, it was still a loss. This game was set before we even kicked off so a lot of our starters didn't play much.

You play the whole year to get that first round bye, but playing in Wild Card weekend is what you make it. I have been fortunate enough to be in both situations and that extra rest is great to heal up and get ready, but if you win your game the opening week it can be a big momentum boost. That's what the Cardinals did last year. They played a really good Falcons team and that win propelled them to the Super Bowl.

The Packers have an outstanding offense led by Aaron Rodgers. Their wide receivers are exceptional athletes and can go up and get the ball as good as anyone. Rodgers has been great all year and he can make things hard for a secondary. You can't just focus on the pass though because they have a guy in Ryan Grant who ran for 1200 yards.

In practice we worked on fundamentals just like always because there are always things you want to tune up. But the main emphasis this week has been on Green Bay.

I'm looking forward to playing a home playoff game in front of our fans. I expect it to be an outstanding atmosphere. Packer fans travel well, so it will be up to our fans to drown them out and try to make life uncomfortable for the team on the field. We always have a great crowd and I'm betting they'll be hostile come game time.

No Time for Mistakes

Written By Bryant McFadden January 2, 2010

It's pretty crazy that nothing has been solidified yet in the NFC. The door is open for us to get #2, but it's out of our hands. That would be a big achievement for us and it will take a lot of effort on our part to beat a really good Green Bay team on Sunday. I don't know the schedules, but we might be the last ones to play so we might know what's up before we even go.

Because of a weird scheduling deal we could play Green Bay two weeks in a row and that would be pretty awkward. We have no choice but to try and play well both times if it comes to that. There's no chance of us becoming complacent because we know that there's a lot of stuff that needs to improve if we're to be successful in the playoffs. We will be playing top notch talent and we can't afford to be sloppy in our fundamentals and technique. Only really good teams make the playoffs, so you can't make mistakes.

The Packers have an explosive offense led by Aaron Rodgers and he is playing with a lot of confidence right now. He can execute and make all the throws and has a really strong arm. He's doing a great job throwing the ball and his receivers are really stepping up to make big catches. They have their offense at the top of its game and we have to match that regardless if we play them once or twice.

Ups and Downs

Written By Bryant McFadden December 19, 2009

We went into the game against the 49ers ready for Gore to get more touches than he had been getting lately, but when the game started he was able to have some success and put together a pretty good game. We had miscues with our assignments which allowed him to turn five yard gains into 20-30 yard gains. With a guy that good you cannot get away with being out of place.

It's been a crazy three week stretch. We lost the late game to Tennessee, then played great against Minnesota and then got beat pretty good by the Niners. It's been up and down lately, but at least there aren't any glaring issues that we need to address. It's just those little things that add up if you're not careful.

We face the Lions this week and they suffered a pretty big loss last week too. They got beat 48-3 by the Ravens, so both teams are going to be looking to redeem themselves.

One thing that is certain in the NFL is that you can't dwell on records or history to dictate the next game. Motivation is not a problem for us because we're more mad than anyone else with how we played last week.

It's important to play well at the end of the season because if we do get into the playoffs we want to be on a win streak. Limping into the playoffs isn't where you want to be as a team. Our focus and goal right now is on the Lions and nothing else.

Healthy and Dangerous

Written By Bryant McFadden December 11, 2009

It was a collective defensive effort that allowed us to keep Adrian Peterson in check in our win against the Vikings. All 11 guys played their assignments well and the coaches drew up a great game plan for us. Our offense got going early and kept on going all game. We've had key guys banged up all year, so to see the offense clicking as a complete unit is unbelievable. To have Kurt and Anquan healthy and connecting just shows how much harder they make the game for an opposing defense.

With our passing game in top form it’s a dangerous group of guys. You can't just focus in on one guy and try to stop him. If you double team Larry all day then Anquan will hurt you. Then there's Steve Breaston who I think would be a #1 receiver on a lot of teams.

Our goal coming into the season was to win the division and we have a chance to wrap it up this week against the Niners on Monday night. We know that their offense is more complete than it was back in week 1, so we will have to make sure we are ready for whatever it is they're going to do. It seems like we played them forever ago so we need to become familiar with their new style.

I am new to this rivalry this year so I don't really know how it started or anything like that, but people told me before the first game that I needed to be ready for a physical game and that's what we got. I know they're not too fond of us and I expect the same type of game come Monday.

Tough Task Ahead

Written By Bryant McFadden November 13, 2009

We played a great game against the Bears last week. The offense put us up early which made our job as a defense easier. They showed some fight late, but we were able to hold them off for the big win. We held down another really good running back and our run D has been really good as of late. All 11 guys will be called on eventually to help with run defense and everybody is making it a priority to do it well.

We're pretty happy with where we are at 5-3, but we know we could be in even better shape had we played better early. But the important thing is that we're getting better every week and that's what needs to continue happening if we are going to head into the playoffs again.

The four wins in a row have put us in the driver's seat in our division and it feels great that we've put ourselves in that position. Hands down that is the most important thing right now. But with that said we will not be satisfied until after our 16th game and we're headed to the playoffs.

The first thing we need to do in order to take this thing to the postseason is to improve our play at home. We have one of the best crowds in football and we need to play better in front of them. We just need to cut out the unnecessary mistakes that we've been making. It has come down to us killing ourselves in our three home losses this year. We can never play a perfect game, but we need to be much more on the plus side than the negative side.

Doomed by Miscues

Written By Bryant McFadden November 5, 2009

We had a lot of trouble with Carolina's great running back duo last week. DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart hit us pretty hard. They are both pretty similar in size and stature and they can both do serious damage if you allow them to.

They were able to take the game over in the second quarter where they outscored us 21-0 going into the half. We made mistakes and they made big plays. You can't afford to make mistakes against a team with as many weapons as the Panthers have.

We got the Bears next and in a lot of ways they are similar to the Panthers. They have a good QB, great running back and some dangerous receivers. We just have to go out and execute like we can and we'll be alright.

It's probably gonna be cold in Chicago during the game, but that doesn't really bother me. I played in Pittsburgh for years so I'm used to the cold. We had a “no sleeve” rule in Pittsburgh so I think I'll be alright out there. But still, any time you spend outside in that type of cold is tough.

High Level

Written By Bryant McFadden October 24, 2009

I can't tell you how much better it is to be 3-2 rather than 1-2. It's a winning record and that's always what you want. Everybody is playing at a real high level for us right now. Going into the bye at 1-2 I thought we were pretty close to getting it together and we have gotten a lot better in the last two weeks.

We held a pretty good Seahawks offense to 128 total yards last week and it was a collective effort defensively that allowed us to do that. We didn't allow them to get into a rhythm. We sent pressure all day and stayed in Hasselbeck's face and didn't give him time to find his receivers.

We don't know if we're gonna have Anquan for this week's game against the Giants, but if he doesn't play someone else is gonna have to step up. That's just how it goes. Whether it's one guy or a group effort, we know we have the players capable of stepping up and playing well in his absence. If Anquan isn't there it won't be the same obviously, but we see what the other guys can do in practice all the time.

It's always a plus to have guys like Kurt, Larry and Anquan on our team because they are the guys who always get it done for us and allow the defense to stay off the field. Hopefully they can make the kinds of plays that the Saints did last week against the Giants.

Every week is a new challenge, but this could be a real good indicator of where we are as a team. Since we play the Seahawks twice a year we kinda knew what to expect from them. With the Giants this is probably the only time we will face them, so it's a different kind of challenge in preparing for them and finding out their tendencies. It would look real good to be 4-2 after starting out 1-2, for sure.

Getting There

Written By Bryant McFadden October 16, 2009

We were able to come away with a win over a tough Texans team last week. They battled back and almost sent the game into OT, but we were able to stop them at the goal line. That was the biggest play of the game because who knows what would have happened in OT? After that moment the game swung in our favor.

DRC came through with a big interception for a TD that ended up being the difference in the game. It was a big play not only for him but for the team. They were driving towards maybe taking the lead at that point and his pick grabbed momentum for us.

We're feeling good that the win got us right back in the division race at 2-2, but we didn't play as well as we need to in order to compete. But with that said, our fundamentals were a lot better in the Texans game. A lot of the mental mistakes that we were making before our bye were a lot better too. We worked a lot on technique and better tackling during our week off and it paid off. We did a god job of knocking down some passes in the game too.

It's a plus for us that all the guys in the secondary are good tacklers so we can come up and help in run support. We take pride in being able to help with the run as well as the pass.

We get the Seahawks on the road on Sunday and it's gonna be tough. They are always really hard to beat in their place. It's gonna take a collective effort to win and we will need to play a complete ball game. Division games are always tough, especially on the road. But hopefully the D can step up and play top notch.

Nobody really plays their best ball in September and October, so if we can keep improving as the weeks go by we'll be happy and win some games.

Good Time for a Bye

Written By Bryant McFadden October 8, 2009

We practiced through last Thursday then got until Monday off because of our bye. I went back home to Florida and just relaxed mostly. My ankle has been bothering me for a while so it was good to get some rest. I feel almost back to 100% now.

I would say the bye came at a good time for us because of the way we lost the last game beforehand. It's not like we went in on a winning streak and didn't want to break up the momentum.

Our focus as a defense has been on getting back to the fundamentals and footwork. We worked on the little things a lot over the last week or so. Just like against the Colts, stopping the pass is going to be a huge deal against the Texans. The last couple games our emphasis has been on slowing down the pass game. That's the number one thing we have to do against teams who play so well through the air.

It's kind of a must-win atmosphere right now for us, but really every week is like that in the NFL. Every game counts and you don't have the luxury to just relax whether or not you won the game before. We have to have that attitude that this game is a must-win. I think we need that sense of urgency.

After this game at home we play five of the next seven on the road. For me on defense it isn't that big of a deal because we don't ever have to worry about crowd noise or anything, but still, it's hard to win on the road.

A Good Start

Written By Bryant McFadden September 25, 2009

It's always a good feeling to get that first win, especially on the road. Jacksonville is a tough team and they played the Colts real tough in their opener so it was great to play so well against them.

The defense got plenty of rest in the game because the offense was putting together long drives and putting points on the board. It was great to watch.

Antrel scored a TD for us on special teams which is always a huge plus. He kinda took advantage of the dream scenario. There aren't many tacklers on the field when the kick team is in, so he pretty much just had to catch the ball in order to score.

After the first game against the 49ers I thought the DBs needed to be more fundamentally sound and get off the field on third down. We did some real positive things against the Jaguars. We got our hands on some balls and forced some fumbles. We take pride in creating turnovers. We still need to improve, but we were a lot better.

We got Peyton Manning and the Colts this week. I love playing against a guy like him. What competitor doesn't love a challenge like that? He gets you geared up to play even more because you know he's one of the best in the game. His accuracy and patience make him as dangerous as they come.

He's extraordinary because he's always very composed and at ease. You have to do your best to make him uncomfortable back there because he's always calm.

I’m a Cardinal

Written By Bryant McFadden August 18, 2009

My time as a Cardinal has been pretty cool so far. It was a really good situation for me to come here after my time with the Steelers. I decided to come to Arizona because they are a good team and I know some of the players and coaches from before.

Some of the guys gave me some stuff about the Super Bowl last year as soon as I got here. Our strength coach always talks about it. Everybody says that Santonio Holmes never got that second foot down in the end zone. It's pretty funny, though.

It was weird walking into the visitors locker room at Heinz Field the other day. Before the game I played the situation in my head a lot. I kept thinking I would walk into the Steelers locker room by mistake. But it was cool getting to see all those guys again.

I've made a smooth transition to Arizona and even though this is my first time changing teams my home will always be in Florida, so it wasn't like I had to pack everything up and move. Even when I was in Pittsburgh I made my home in Florida. I just packed up a few things to come out here.

The guys here have really helped make it as easy as possible for me. When I got here everybody was talking to me like I've been here for years and I really appreciate that.

It's good to be back with a bunch of my FSU friends again. Me, Darnell Dockett and Boldin all played together and have been really good friends for a long time. I'm looking forward to the Miami-FSU game coming up. I think Miami is a couple years away from being what they used to be. We should be able to handle them. Ending the season with Florida is going to be the really tough one. I haven't quite gotten used to the heat out here in Scottsdale yet. Even though it's hotter here you sweat a lot more in Florida because of the humidity. It's weird to be where it's 105 all the time.

But I am excited about my new team. Talent-wise we have the ability to be one of the best secondaries in the league. In Pittsburgh we got a lot of national recognition as the #1 pass defense and I think we have similar talent here. When this group jells together it's gonna be great because these guys are spectacular.

I won't miss covering Larry Fitzgerald and Anquan Boldin, that's for sure. I get enough of that in practice these days.

This team knows that they can win now instead of just hoping to win. If we prepare hard there's no reason we can't compete for the NFC crown again.
